The wife, having escaped through the door but having lost her arms and legs, crawled across the grass toward the neighbor’s doorstep, biting grass with her teeth to drag herself forward bit by bit. The station was a stronghold where a murder gang transferred important corpses. On that day, due to negligence during the transfer, a man accidentally wandered in. When the man was squatting, they happened to push a corpse out from the exit. The boy had been frail and sickly since childhood, and combined with the abuse, he had a deep psychological shadow—every night he had to hold his mother’s hand to fall asleep. One day, the mother finally couldn’t take it anymore and put sleeping pills in the teapot at home. Before going to bed, both the boy and his father drank the water from the teapot. That night, the boy again fell asleep holding his mother’s hand. The frail boy was the first to die from the overdose. When the mother got up at midnight to kill the father, she found the boy had already gone into rigor mortis and couldn’t be pried loose from her hand. In overwhelming grief, she first chopped off her own hand that the boy was holding, then turned and furiously hacked at the boy’s father. The room was covered in blood. The father, dismembered into pieces by the despairing mother, lay scattered everywhere. The one-handed mother leaned against the foot of the bed, gazing tenderly at the boy, waiting for the eyes that would never open again to open—and finally bled to death.

I was walking my cat and came to a forest. Thick fog filled the air, and white powder was scattered all over the ground. I felt something was off and wanted to leave, but my cat suddenly broke free and ran off. I followed its direction deeper into the forest, but when I finally found it, I saw it being brutally tortured to death by a man with his back to me. Rage ignited my reason in an instant. Losing control, I picked up a stone at my feet and slammed it hard into the back of that man’s head. Blood splattered, and he fell to the ground with a thud. I wiped the blood off my face and silently buried the cat under a tree root nearby.
When I walked out of the foggy forest, I found myself surrounded by police with guns pointed at me. During the long wait that followed, their investigation results came back. They told me the white powder in the forest was a very potent hallucinogenic drug, so they concluded that I had accidentally inhaled a large amount of it, experienced intense hallucinations, and then killed the man and the cat. Thus I was transferred from the holding room to the medical ward, where I was observed and tested for subsequent drug reactions.
How long did those days last? I’ve started to lose track. Every time I wake up, white fills my vision. White ceilings, white walls, white sheets, and the white uniforms coming and going around me. It seemed my body was forever covered in tubes connected to huge, cold instruments. The initial confusion, the pain during the tests, and the despair of never being promised release, along with the endless white cage, drove me into madness.
I opened my eyes and stared blankly at the room before me. No instruments, no test tubes, nothing at all—as if I had just dreamed a very long dream, though even the dream’s shape I could no longer recall. Slowly trying to remember, I only vaguely saw myself running madly in the darkness, with no light. “Subject 0213, diagnosed with severe delusional disorder. Proceeding with this week’s fourth rehabilitation test, cumulative 381st.” “Subject 0213, basic tests complete. Beginning the customary questions. Do you remember what happened in the forest?” “I—I killed someone… and a cat.” “Was there white powder?” ”…What powder?” ”…” “Alright, questions complete. Your mental recovery is satisfactory; the estimated discharge date is near. Subject 0213, please return.” I slowly stood up. My turbid eyes swept across the room and finally landed on the iron window in the wall, where there was a faint light.
“Any other questions, Subject 0213?” “No… no.”
I stared at the doctor’s face in disbelief. The eyes hidden behind the mask glinted with a strange light. “You’re saying you toyed with me for so long, I spent so much time on this bed, and the final conclusion is that I actually have a mental illness?” “Unfortunately, but according to the monitoring data…” “You’re committing murder! I know very well whether I’m sick or not!” “What about the white powder? We found no such white powder in the forest at all.” “Impossible—I brought some back before… I have it on me, I remember clearly!” “That was just your hallucination. In reality, they were only some gravel.” “You—” “Please go pack up the clothes you left with us; the vehicle to transfer you is about to arrive.” In the room, I took off the hospital gown and changed into the clothes I had hastily thrown into the locker when I arrived. The car arrived.
I watched the gates of the psychiatric hospital. They threw me out there and hurried away. Out of habit, I reached into my pocket and felt a subtle touch. I opened my hand and saw some faint white powder unevenly distributed on my fingers, glinting faintly in the sunlight. I had been deceived.
I raised my hand high like a madman and rushed toward the gate. But the gate began to slowly close. “I have proof! I’m not mentally ill! Let me out! Listen to me—”
The hard gate shut, the gap closing, severing the last sliver of light.
Officer Hou, do you understand? Yes, sir. Remember, what you are doing now is right. It’s all for the highest interests. These are necessary sacrifices. Yes, sir. Complete the mission no matter what, at any cost. Yes, sir. At any cost, complete the mission!
In order to secretly research drugs that violate international conventions, Officer Hou was dispatched to ensure the mission went smoothly. This drug research had to be tested on people with a special blood type, and across the entire country, I was the only ordinary person detected with that blood type. So I was orchestrated into this performance. The white powder was the already-developed half-finished product. It only works on people with that special blood type, but it needs to contact the skin. So while I was away from home, they broke in, killed the cat, and sprinkled the powder on the cat. When I came back and found the cat dead, I went to the nearby forest in grief to bury it. But the drug’s effects began to take hold: the white mist I saw when entering the forest, the white powder on the ground, the cat that ran away, and the man torturing the cat—all of it was produced by the drug’s influence on me. Thus I was naturally put under research and observation. After the tests ended, I was thrown into a psychiatric hospital. Tormented by the drug, when the gate closed, my heart also fell into deathly silence. I don’t know whether I was really sick or not, and they don’t know either, nor do they need to.
In the psychiatric hospital, I lived each day as if it were a year. If numbness counts as a disease, then I am terminally ill.

But I didn’t know my wife had made the same decision as me. I invited my wife to dive in a remote deep lake, and she gladly agreed. We put on all our diving gear, dropped off the boat, and sank beneath the surface. The lake water was deep blue; the bottom, pitch black. My plan to kill my wife was to arrive at the lake bottom ahead of time, tie an iron chain to a rock, and later entangle her with it so she would stay at the bottom forever, where no one could find her. When I reached that spot, I was astonished to find my chain had disappeared—and then another chain silently wrapped around me. I turned around in shock and met my wife’s indifferent eyes behind her diving mask. It turned out my wife’s plan was to secretly follow me, and after I left, go down and hide the chain elsewhere. But my wife’s chain had no anchor; it couldn’t hold me at all. I tried to break free, yet suddenly I couldn’t breathe—my wife had shut off my oxygen tank behind my back while I was looking for the chain. In despair, I watched her swim toward me, only to be astonished to see her wrap the chain around herself too. We were pulled together by the chains. My wife suddenly smiled silently and gently embraced me. What I didn’t know was that my wife’s oxygen tank had been less than half full before we even went down. She never intended to return to the surface. When death is near and your life flashes before your eyes, you see the most profound scene from deep in your memory. And so I saw the scene of our first meeting underwater. My wife returned to the age when she smiled like a flower blooming in the deep water, her eyes brimming with starlight. Equally young, I swam toward her with a grin. The lake water was clear, and the bottom swayed. I suddenly embraced my wife back. We held each other tightly at the pitch-black lake bottom—no sound, no indifference.
That day was clear, and I said to this girl: I will love you forever, forever.

I’m an insurance salesman. As the year drew to a close, I nearly drove myself mad chasing my sales target. The appearance of a little girl gave me a bold idea: kill the little girl so that her parents would be filled with fear, which would help me sell insurance door to door. To make it look like a homicide, I took off the girl’s clothes (homicide is covered by insurance, but suicide is not). This also meant the key would fall into the killer’s hands. Before the girl’s parents could change their locks or flee the city, I began going door to door selling insurance. On the train, the woman hid the box of money and kept the key herself. After getting off the train, she called her lover and learned the situation. She told him about the money and where it was hidden, then said, “If you want the key, come find me.” But she accidentally fell into the water and died. The lover found the box on the train, and a few days later found the woman’s body. However, because the body had swollen in the water, and the key was a necklace that had gotten stuck around her neck, the lover never found it in the end. I said, “The weather is so nice today, let’s go boating.” My boyfriend, as usual, drawled, “Why go boating? Isn’t strolling in the park good enough? It’s so troublesome, really.” Ah, so annoying. Why did I end up with such a lazy, troublesome boyfriend!
I turned my head away and sulked. My boyfriend helplessly tried to soothe me from the side. “Alright, alright—we’re already on the boat now, don’t be mad, honey. I’ll row and you watch the scenery, okay?” “It’s not purely because I’m lazy. I checked the weather forecast today—there might be a storm—” I whipped my head around and glared at my boyfriend. “How dare you make excuses! You’re just lazy, you big lazy pig!” Seeing my boyfriend’s helpless look, I suddenly felt it wasn’t interesting anymore. “I don’t want to row anymore. I want to go back.”
Okay, let’s go back.
A sudden rainstorm nearly capsized our little boat. In a short while, black clouds filled the sky. In a panic, I suddenly remembered that because we had rushed here, I had ignored my boyfriend’s protests and casually pointed at the smallest boat. So now, the little boat is about to capsize. “What are we going to do?” I found my voice already trembling with tears. “Don’t be afraid, I’m here.” My boyfriend’s voice had never made me feel this safe. I looked at my calm-faced boyfriend, and my tightly clenched heart suddenly loosened a little. But the very next moment, a fierce wave lifted our little boat! In the air, my mind went blank. I… was I going to just… But the next moment, I was back in a warm embrace. My boyfriend had jumped over and grabbed me the instant I was flung up—but he was supposed to be holding the oars! In despair, I watched the two oars slip into the water and vanish in an instant. In the storm, my boyfriend seemed to be talking, but in my despair I couldn’t understand a word. Yet those words seemed alive, each one drilling into my mind. “It’s okay, honey. You will definitely survive. Luckily you chose this fishing boat—I noticed an axe hanging on its side before we boarded. You’ll have to row yourself across later. My darling, be strong, okay?” Dazedly, I watched my boyfriend raise the axe. Suddenly I understood, and I rushed over like a madwoman, wailing. “Don’t—” “Don’t move, or I’ll cut wrong. Didn’t we agree? We’re going back.” “No, you can’t—Qing, don’t—” I was flung back against the boat frame by another fierce wave. “Don’t move.” My boyfriend looked at me sternly. Suddenly I couldn’t read his gaze anymore. I had thought I knew him well. His laziness, his easygoing nature, and the memories of never having been scolded by him—all vanished in that stern look. “Promise me, go back alive with them.” Blood splattered out, mixing with tears and blurring my eyes.
Okay, we’re going back.
I rowed numbly and lifelessly. The storm still roared in my ears. The raindrops seemed to lighten a little, yet also seemed to keep falling madly. Lines of red trailed behind the sides of the little boat, soon swallowed by the surging lake.
Why are you slacking off again, you big lazy pig? Get up! Alright, honey, stop messing around and let me sleep a little longer. Just a little. Sleep, sleep, sleep—that’s all you know! What will you do if one day you never wake up! It’s fine. Just call me when you wake up. I don’t mind.
Honey. What is it now? I won’t call you. I’m leaving, hmph. I love you.

Since returning from Wonderland to the real world, it seemed a long time had passed. Alice often wondered whether it had really all been just a dream. She went to the lake as usual to read. One day, while walking in the forest, the ground suddenly gave way beneath her. First came the endless fall, and then the wind so familiar, rushing past her ears.
When she woke again, the Mad Hatter was already standing before her.
He said the Red Queen had flown into a rage upon learning Alice had again trespassed into her domain, and decreed that if she wanted to leave, she must play a card-drawing game at the tea party. Win, and she would be released; otherwise, she would be beheaded. “Don’t be afraid, I’ll help you.” The Mad Hatter gently stroked Alice’s golden hair.
The tea party began. The maids laid out the playing cards in a row. The Red Queen sneered: “Three chances. Draw the ace of hearts, and I’ll let you go.” Alice drew two cards, and neither was it. In despair, she remembered the Mad Hatter’s words—he had said he bribed the maid to place the winning card as the first one.
Alice turned over the first card. A red A appeared before her eyes. Alice threw it to the Red Queen in relief. The Red Queen glanced at it, then tossed the card to the ground. The guards leaned in for a look: the ace of spades.
The executioner’s axe fell, and the golden head rolled to the ground. In Alice’s eyes, dilated with confusion and fear, was reflected the Red Queen’s cruel, wanton smile.
The Mad Hatter admired the scene, took a bite of a butter biscuit, and reveled in the dopamine being secreted.
Alice, you’re still as naive as ever. Even though you’re red-black colorblind, you had no guard against this card. But ever since you abandoned me and returned to your world that time, I have been tormented by longing and resentment. I was really about to go mad. So this time, you can finally never leave again, right?
But I didn’t lie to you—this card really is the winning card.
The gushing blood dyed the blooming roses even more beautiful. The Mad Hatter stood up and looked at Alice. Her empty eyes seemed still to be gazing back at him.

Note: Adapted from a famous urban development scandal in American history. In the early 20th century, Los Angeles, located on the desert coast, lacked fresh water and needed a reservoir for water storage. Against this backdrop, developers cooperated with the city government to push through a dam project, diverting water from the distant Owens River Valley. Three points stand out: first, the developers reaped huge profits from contracting the government project. Second, to get the project approved, the developers went so far as to dump the reservoir’s stored water into the sea, worsening the city’s water crisis. Third, the developers bought large tracts of suburban desert cheaply, and the diverted water was used to turn it into land with water, reaping enormous profits. - Three Brothers (A Classic That Lives On)
Riddle: A and B are twins. They are very close to C, and the three sleep in the same bed every day. One day, A dies of illness, and that night C kills B. Please deduce the full story.
Solution: After A died of illness, C, who slept between A and B every night, could not endure sleeping with no one on one side due to a psychological quirk. So he split B vertically in half. When sleeping, C placed B’s right half on his left side and B’s left half on his right side, to ensure the “sense of security” when sleeping.
